The Alamo and River Walk

Before leaving Lake Medina, we spent an afternoon in downtown San Antonio. Enroute from the campground there are a lot of nice houses built on the hillsides.   Ina especially liked this one.

This is a painting depicting the battle on March 16th, 1836. Note that the only surviving portions of the original mission is the long barracks (where Travis, Bowie, Crocket and the others died) across the courtyard from the burning building; and the church building toward the back of the compound.

Here's the sanctuary building.  The original walls of the mission would have extended across the street in front of the camera position and then paralleled the street to the left of the camera. Unfortunately, photography is not allowed in either of the two buildings.

In front of the long barracks is this very old live oak along with a statue of William Travis who commanded the Texican defenders.

After a spaghetti lunch, we walked about a mile of the downtown river walk.  Rather disserted but definitely an urban oasis.

 

March 3rd was our last day at Medina Lake.  The next morning we got on the road at about 9:30AM heading West toward Del Rio Texas.
