Xscapers Moab Area Convergence

3/15-3/25/18

A few days after arriving in the Moab area, the Moab Area Xscapers Convergence kicked off at the old Moab airport south of town.

There were many events scheduled for the coming week including, jeep outings, pot lucks, hikes, dog walks, and campfires.

We attended a few of the events.

Ina's Jap Jae was quickly consumed.

The weather was generally good with temperatures in the 60's during the day and 40's at night. There was only one day of nasty wind and rain.

We did the short hike to nearby Kens Lake and the the Faux Falls. I will have additional postings on our visit to Dead Horse point State Park and the Xscapers Jeep safari on the White Rim Trail in Canyonlands NP.

White Rim Trail

3/21/18
Our 8 hour jeep safari on Canyonland's White Rim Trail started with a view of the road down from the visitor's center.

After airing down the tires to get better traction and reduce the risk of punctures, we started down the switch-backs on the face of the escarpment.

Once on the trail, the roads were not steep.  However, there was a lot of rough rocky places. Views were incredible.

Although I have seen pictures of people standing on this natural bridge, it was a bridge no one in our group dared to cross.

One of the canyon rims along the way included a kind of funnel.  The edge was scary due to the severe under cut of the cliff.

Near Noon we made the descent to the Colorado river at Lathrop Canyon. Very steep initially.
Lunch at the river was peaceful and a welcome break from the rough road down.

After lunch we ascended back to the rim trail and headed west to another under-cut canyon rim for some group photos.

Our return to Moab was via Phosphate Road - 30 miles of fairly rough gravel and rock with a few muddy places.

It was a long day covering a lot of rough road, but fun for all.

Dead Horse Point State Park

3/19-3/20/18
Dead Horse Point is probably one of the most impressive canyon view points with the Grand View point in Canyonlands a close second.

We made two trips to Dead Horse Point.  On the 19th of March Ina and I hiked one of the short trails from the visitor center out to the point,

The next day we returned with the Xscapers for sunset photos.

Note the man standing on the cliff's edge.
